The Final Reminder of Glenn's Flight

On October 29, 1998 at 2:00pm, the Shuttle Discovery and it's crew will lift off, taking John Glenn on his second trip into space after more than 30 years. (Aboard Friendship 7 on February 20, 1962, John Glenn was the first astronaut to orbit the earth). There is a 2 hour and 30 minute window. The mission will last almost 9 days, landing November 7, at 12:04pm at KSC.

This event is expected to draw more than 300,000 space fans to the Space Coast, according to the News Observer, Oct 8, 1998. The Brevard County Tourist Development Council and the KSC Visitor Complex have teamed up to bring a live broadcast of QVC to the Space Coast. As the world watches the historic Space launch of Astronaut/Senator Glenn's journey into space, QVC blasts off with a 2-hour broadcast on Thursday from 1:00pm to 3:00pm.

Astronauts Alan Bean and Richard "Dick" Gordon will broadcast live from the Space Walk of Fame at Veteran's Memorial Park, sharing memories of space travel and exploration from mankind's second lunar landing. Nearly 30 years ago Capt. Bean and Command Module pilot Gordon ventured above the earth, experiencing what only a handful of astronauts ever had before. During the mission on Nov 19, 1969, Bean became the fourth man to walk on the moon.

It is expected that traffic will be at a stand-still that day on several of our main roads. Remember to include the traffic delays in your plans. Our Space Cost will probably be jammed from north of Titusville, through Cocoa, Rockledge, Merritt Island, and possibly south of Melbourne. For you visitors not familiar with our area, it may be of help to let you know of joining roads between U.S. 1 and I-95 not quite as direct as SR 50 and SR 528 (the "Bee Line"). In north Titusville (approv. 4-5 miles north of 50), Garden St., left off of U.S. 1 takes you to I-95, also in Mims (approx. 5 miles further north), taking a left at the only traffic light on to SR 46 takes you to I-95.

On the other hand, if traffic is causing too much flustration, head to the beaches, Spaceport U.S.A., or the Astronaut Hall of Fame (traffic should be less in those directions) and have fond memories of your visit to the Space Coast.
