Area Code 407 Proposed Changes

Telephone callers in the 407 area may soon have to dial 10 digits even on local calls.

Under a plan recommended Thursday (11/19) by the state Public Service Commission staff, current customers in Orange, Seminole and Osceola counties would retain the 407 area code, while future customers would receive a new area code.

The change also would apply to Lake County's Montverde and Volusia County's DeBary and Deltona, which also share the 407 area code.

Brevard County, also in the 407 area would get its own area code. Both current and future customers would use the new designation, and Brevard callers would retain seven-digit local dialing. The fate of a sliver of Brevard in Sebastian, which uses the 561 area, hasn't been decided.

Members of the PSC staff said they made the recommendation after two dozen people at heavily attended hearings in Brevard County said they wanted a single area code for their county.

A growing demand for cellular phones, pagers and fax machines is depleting the supply of available phone numbers and driving the creation of area codes across the nation.

A Universal Studios Escape representative said his company is disappointed and hopes the PSC will not approve the recommendation. The commission will consider the change at its Dec 1 meeting.

Likewise, the mayor of Deltona said his city will ask the PSC not to approve the plan.

Others, however, applauded the recommendation.

If the PSC approves the plan, chosen from 12 alternatives, it would take effect Dec 1, with a grace period until April 1.
