School to be Named for Governor Chiles

Governor Lawton Chiles will be remembered by thousands of Seminole County children who will attend a middle school bearing his name. The Seminole County School board voted to name its new Oviedo-area Middle School for the Governor, who was eulogized this week as a man dedicated to helping children.

Lawton M. Chiles Middle Scjhool is scheduled to be ready for students by August 2000. It will likely be the first Florida school named for Governor Chiles, Superintendent Paul Hagerty said.

Five Republicans on the School board unanimously approved naming the school for the Democrat who served Florida for 40 years in the State House and Senate, the U.S. Senate and as Governor. The name was suggested by Administrator Ken Bovio, the district's Tallahassee lobbyist.

The school will be located just outside of Oviedo on Lockwood Blvd. Originally, the School Board agreed to name the school Lockwood Middle School.

The Board plans, however, are to convert this school into a high school within the next six years, and build a replacement Middle School off County Road 419..
